Questions and answers

The questions municipal administrations ask most often about the Trennio municipal app: costs, roll-out, features and data protection. Your question isn't here? Write to us, and we will reply within two working days.

What is Trennio?

Trennio is the municipal app for Swiss municipalities and cities. It brings together what residents need day to day: collection dates with reminders, waste recognition by photo, drop-off points with a map, news, events and every administration contact from A to Z.

The app runs in your municipality's branding and at your own address. That means your municipality is not a subtenant in someone else's collection app: no third-party logo, no third-party sender, no third-party brand between you and your residents.

How much does the municipal app cost?

The annual licence depends on two things: the edition (features) and the number of residents (price). It starts at CHF 990 per year for small municipalities. There are no hidden feature surcharges; all prices are published openly in the pricing overview. One hour of support per year is included; additional hours cost CHF 195, the annual package CHF 840. Trennio is currently not subject to VAT; any VAT introduced later will be added.

The one-off set-up is free until the end of 2026.

Do residents have to download an app?

No. Trennio runs directly in the browser on phones, tablets and computers and can be added to the home screen with two taps. No app store download, no registration and no user account are needed.

Push reminders work on Android devices and on iPhone and iPad from iOS 16.4 (with the app added to the home screen). On older devices, calendar export and the app view are fully available.

Because the app is not distributed through an app store, a fix doesn't need approval from Apple or Google. It is available to all devices, and the app offers the new version the next time it is opened. Nobody is left stuck on an outdated version that can no longer be updated.

What happens to our content if we stop, or if Trennio stops?

The content belongs to your municipality. The main administrator can download it at any time in the administration portal as a file: collection dates, drop-off points, areas, news, events, the Local A–Z and the reports received. The file is in the open JSON format and can be reused without Trennio. The export is protected by the second login factor and is logged.

If you cancel, we keep the content available for export for 30 days after the contract ends and then delete it. There is no commitment beyond the contract term.

If we significantly restrict the service, we will announce this at least three months in advance. You can then cancel with effect from that date and export your content until then.

What we cannot guarantee: Trennio runs in the browser. If Apple or Google change their rules for web apps, this also affects Trennio. We have no influence over that, so we don't promise that every feature will always work the same way on every device and in every browser version.

How quickly is our municipality ready to go?

Usually within 48 hours of receiving all the data, on working days. We handle the set-up: an existing collection schedule as a PDF is all we need to start, and no IT skills are required. For complex calendars with several areas, we give you a firm date in advance.

Which features does the app include?

The scope depends on the edition you choose:

How does waste recognition by photo work?

A photo of the item is all it takes: AI image recognition instantly shows which bin or collection it belongs in, with local guidance from your municipality. This reduces wrongly sorted waste and spares the counter the question “Where does this go?”. For your municipality's residents, fair use applies with a generous daily allowance per device.

What about data protection?

Trennio complies with the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revFADP). The app needs no resident account and creates no profiles; settings stay on the device. Personal data is only collected when someone uses a feature: for issue reporting, the details entered; for reminders, the device's push address; for the AI scan, a device identifier and a non-reversible hash of the IP address. Which data this is and how long it is kept is set out in the privacy policy. Hosting is in the EU, and the website analytics are cookie-free.

Does the app appear in our municipality's design?

Yes. Your own logo, your own colours and your own address such as ihregemeinde.trennio.ch. If you like, you can link to the app directly from your municipality's website. Residents see their municipality, not Trennio.

Does Trennio also work for cities with several districts?

Yes. Cities can run several districts or wards, each with its own collection calendar, managed centrally. Residents select their district once and only receive the dates that apply to them.

How does the administration maintain content?

Via its own administration portal in the browser: dates, news, events, drop-off points and the Local A–Z can be updated without any IT skills. We handle the initial set-up to get you started; after that, you decide what you maintain yourself and where we help.

Is the app available in several languages?

By default, the app appears in your municipality's language. Up to three additional languages (such as German, French or Italian) can be activated as add-ons; the prices are published openly in the pricing overview.

Is the app accessible?

The app can be used with a keyboard and a screen reader, with high contrast and Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface optimised for readability. This way your municipality also reaches older people and people with visual impairments, at no extra cost.

Who is behind Trennio?

Trennio is developed and operated in Switzerland. The provider is Sinew GmbH, based in Kienberg SO (UID CHE-293.157.044). Contact: info@trennio.app, details in the legal notice.
